Porsche Cayman from Japan

Porsche Cayman from Japan

The Porsche Cayman is one of the most interesting compact sports cars on the market. In great simplicity, it can be said that this is a Boxster without an opening roof. If you are thinking of a sporty Porsche from Japan, but at the same time you do not want it to be a 911, the Cayman is an excellent choice. So far, three generations of this model have appeared, and the most demanded are the second and third. Before you decide on a purchase, it is worth knowing the details.

Porsche Cayman - 1st generation - 987c

The Porsche Boxster II generation has the designation 987, while the 1st generation Cayman is designated as 987c. This happened not by chance, because both models are based on the same platform. Cayman was released as a coupe version of the Boxster model. First, in 2005, the Porsche Cayman S debuted, and only in 2006 it was joined by a version sold as a base.

Porsche Cayman S

The car is powered by a 3.4 engine in the boxer system. The maximum power is 295 hp, and the maximum torque is 340 Nm. All this with a weight of only 1340 kg. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes only 5.4 seconds, and if you add a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, you get a purebred, sporty car. Optionally, it was possible to order a version with a Tiptronic transmission.

Porsche Cayman

The basic version of the Cayman model has a 2.7 l engine and a maximum power of 245 hp. To say that the Cayman is a Boxster in the coupe version is a big simplification, since the cars share only the platform, the front of the interior, the front fenders, the doors, the lighting and the hood. Cars also have a similar suspension, although in the Cayman model it has changed settings due to greater rigidity.

Porsche Cayman - facelift

In 2009, the car underwent a facelift, which consisted not only in refreshing the appearance. In the base Cayman, the engine capacity has been increased. From that moment on, it was offered with a 2.9 engine equipped with direct fuel injection.

Porsche Cayman R

In 2011, the most powerful and lightest road version of the Cayman appeared, which was designated as the Cayman R. The car is 55 kg lighter and 10 hp more powerful than the Cayman S. The sprint time to a hundred has been reduced to 4.7 seconds. The car uses many elements made of lightweight materials, as well as the removal of unnecessary equipment for purely driving comfort, and wheels with a diameter of 19 inches were used, which at the time of launch were the lightest in the entire Porsche range. For this, the handling characteristics were improved, and the suspension was lowered by 20 mm.

Porsche Cayman - 2nd generation - 981c

In 2012, the second generation Cayman debuted, which went on sale only in the spring of 2013 as a car for the 2014 model year. The car was available in two variants. In the basic, it has a 2.7 engine, and the S version is powered by a 3.4 displacement engine. In both cases, customers could choose between a 6-speed manual transmission and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

In addition to the obvious change in the appearance of the car, the car is also 30 kg lighter than the previous generation. The dimensions have also changed slightly. The Cayman 981c is longer and lower. The front wheel spacing has been increased by 40 mm and the rear by 18 mm. The wheelbase has been increased by as much as 60 mm.

In 2014, the Cayman R with a 3.4 engine with 340 hp also appeared in dealerships. It is worth mentioning that this engine comes in a straight line from the 911 model.

Porsche Cayman GTS

Porsche Cayman of the 981c series had 3 exciting special versions. The first of these is the Cayman GTS, which was created in 2014. The car differs not only stylistically, but also technically. The suspension was lowered by 20 mm, the engine power increased to 341 hp. Acceleration to a hundred with a manual transmission takes 4.9 s, and with an automatic - 4.7 s in standard mode and 4.5 s in Sport Plus mode, which is included in the Sports Chrono package.

Porsche Cayman GT4

In 2015, the Cayman GT4 saw the light of day, which made the automotive world take this model more seriously than before. The 3.8 engine from the Porsche 911 Carrera S with 380 hp went under the hood and was only available with a manual transmission. The air intakes of the front bumper have been increased to provide more air for the additional radiator. A deflector has also been added to increase the clamping force.

The Porsche Cayman GT4 has an active suspension with shock absorbers from the 911 GT3 model, which is 30 mm lower than the standard one. In the Club Sport package, a half-seat cage, six-point seat belts, a fire extinguisher and an installation for mounting the power off button have been added. For ambitious drivers, the Sport Chrono package has been prepared with the ability to read telemetry data via an application on a smartphone.

Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport

The Porsche Cayman GT4 in the Clubsport version is designed only for driving on the track. The engine still has a power of 380 hp. The gearbox is dual-clutch, but has a deactivated 7th gear. The Clubsport version weighs 1300 kg and is prepared to install a 100 l fuel tank for long-distance racing. The car has a full safety cage, compliant with FIA requirements, six-point seat belts and bucket seats.

Porsche 718 Cayman - 3rd generation - 982c

The latest generation of the Cayman model has been renamed and since then it is known as the 718 Cayman. The 718 number refers to the car that won the Targa Florio race in 1959 and 1960. The car debuted in 2016.

In the 718 Cayman, Porsche abandoned the six-cylinder engine and replaced it with a four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0 engine. In the S version, a 2.5 engine with a turbine with variable blade geometry was installed. A multimedia screen with PCM 4.0 system appeared in the interior.

Porsche 718 Cayman T

The car debuted in 2020. In this version, the Cayman is 20 mm lower than the base variant. It has a Sport Chrono package with a spoiler, a GT4 Short Shifter gear mechanism from the GT4 model, a sports exhaust system, a smaller steering wheel, wheels from the Porsche 911 Carrera S in Titanium Gray and other details.

Porsche 718 Cayman GTS

In the GTS version, the Porsche 718 Cayman has an engine with a capacity of 2.5 and a capacity of 365 hp. The sprint from zero to a hundred takes just 3.9 seconds. The car appeared on offer in 2017.

Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0

The car went on sale in 2020. As the name suggests, a 4.0 l engine from the Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder models went under the hood here. Its power was reduced to 394 hp. The piquancy is added by the combination of rear-wheel drive with a manual transmission, which is maximally engaging for the driver.

Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and GT4 RS

The GT4 version, which saw the light of day in 2019, could not be missing from the range. The car has larger side air intakes and an adjustable spoiler that generates a downforce of 150 kg. Engine power is 420 hp. This is the first Porsche with a cylinder deactivation system. The front suspension and brakes come in a straight line from the 911 GT3, and the active damping system, ABS and track stabilization system strategies were taken from the 911 GT3 RS.

In the GT4 RS version, the power has been increased to 500 hp, and the sprint to a hundred takes only 3.4 seconds. The rear spoiler has been changed. The new one does not have the ability to adjust, but it offers 25 percent more downforce than the GT4. At the Nurburgring Nordschleife was 23 seconds ahead of the GT4.
