Today, Toyota is associated with hybrid cars, and Nissan is associated with family SUVs. However, there was a time when both brands offered sports models that ignited the imagination of car enthusiasts. The Nissan Skyline GTR and Toyota Supra IV have become iconic not only for their appearance, but above all for the fact that you can easily improve their performance.
Toyota Supra IV gen. hit the market in 1993 and although it was produced until 2002, it disappeared from Europe after just 3 years. It has the designation A80. In the export version, she had a turbo engine 2JZ-GTE with 324 hp at 5600 rpm. /min, and the maximum torque was 427 Nm. However, if you are interested in importing a car from Japan, you can also come across a weaker turbo version with 280 hp and a non-turbo variant 2JZ-GE with 223 hp.
The base for each version is a 6-cylinder in-line engine with a capacity of 2952 cm3. A new 6-speed gearbox appeared here, which was offered in a twin-turbo version. In the variants without a compressor, the manufacturer used a gearbox with 5 gears. There was also a four-speed automatic.
The best choice, of course, is a twin-turbo engine, where one compressor worked at low engine speeds, and the other turned on at higher ones. This was to reduce the occurrence of the so-called turbojet phenomenon. The version for the European market has larger brakes, an active spoiler, an air intake on the hood and a differential radiator. The American version differed from it in the absence of an inlet. It was sold in two versions — with a standard roof and a targa (the so-called Aero Top).
Toyota Supra IV with a twin-turbo engine became famous for the fact that you can significantly increase the power of the engine without having to replace its key elements with forged ones. Here we are talking about powers of the order of up to 700 hp, although, according to some sources, the gearbox is enough for a maximum of 500 hp. Rear-wheel drive makes the car ideal for drifting.
Prices vary depending on mileage, condition, engine version and whether the car has undergone modifications and start at 2.2 million yen, i.e. more than 55 thousand PLN. The Nissan Skyline GT-R has been produced since 1969, but it was not until the 1998 Nissan Skyline R34 that it gained cult status. The GT-R version of this coupe appeared a year later. A powerful engine combined with four-wheel drive and excellent handling characteristics turned out to be a recipe for success. Added to this, of course, is the characteristic appearance of this car.
In 2000, more than a dozen plays went to the United States, 4 of which were used in the production of the film “Too Fast, Too Furious”, which had a huge impact on the emergence of this model in pop culture. Although he has previously appeared in the “Gran Turismo” series of games and the well-known manga “Initial D” in narrow circles, he gained real fame precisely after his appearance on the screens of cinemas.
Over the years, many variants have appeared, so it is difficult to say unequivocally how many horses the Nissan Skyline GTR R 34 has. The first one had a maximum power of 332 hp for the export version and 280 hp for the Japanese version. Equipped with two turbines, the RB26DETT engine has a volume of 2.6 l. The gearbox had 4 or 5 gears.
Fans of driving on the track for the first time in the history of the model had at their disposal a digital display, which in the Nismo version had a lap counter and an overload indicator in corners.
There were also special versions with a power of up to 500 hp, which were able to accelerate above 300 km/h. The rarest was the GT-R R tune with a 450 hp engine. Only 3 copies were made. In 2002, the Z-Tune version was created, where the engine capacity was increased to 2.8 l. The maximum speed was a dizzying 372 km/h.
In the case of the Nissan Skyline R34, piquancy is added by the fact that this model was produced only until 2002, which further increases its value. The GT-R version can be expensive. For example, the V Spec II Nürburgring in perfect condition costs over PLN 1 million. There is more to it cost of importing a car from Japan and its registration in Poland.
