Mercedes-Benz S-Class W221 (2005-2013)
The Mercedes W221 was introduced in 2005 as the 2006 model. It was larger and more technically advanced than the W220. Its appearance is inspired by Maybach. It is based on a dedicated platform, has Airmatic suspension as standard, and as an option - Active Body Control, which prevents overtaking. It was sold as standard with rear-wheel drive, and from 2007 onwards 4MATIC was offered as an option. The car is available in the standard axle size (SWB) version and in the Long Wheel Base variant.
In 2009, the car underwent a facelift. From the outside, it consisted in changing the grille, headlights (bi-xenon with LED DRL and Intelligent Light System), redesigning the front bumper and rear lights. After the facelift of the Mercedes W221, the interior was enriched with the Command system with an 8" screen and better components, a new steering wheel with shift paddles and a redesigned center console. In 2011, the manufacturer introduced further improvements to the Command system.

The car was offered only with gasoline engines, since this type of fuel was the leading in Japan. The following units were sold:
- 3.0 V6 - available only in Asia, power 231 hp, gearbox 7 G-Tronic;
- 3.5 V6 - popular in Japan, power 272 hp, gearbox 7 G-Tronic;
- 5.5 V8 - power 382 hp, gearbox 7 G-Tronic, optionally available with 4MATIC drive;
- 5.5 V12 Bi-turbo - power 517 hp, gearbox 5 G-Tronic, available only in the LWB version;
- 6.0 V12 Bi-turbo - power 630 hp, gearbox 7 G-Tronic, available only in LWB, AMG versions.

The Japanese were able to buy in the salons the following versions of the Mercedes W221:
- S300 (SWB/LWB) - including four-zone automatic climate control, Command with Japanese navigation, leather seats with electric adjustment and setting memory, active Distronic Plus cruise control, Harman Kardon Logic7 audio system, Parktronic parking sensors, electric tailgate;
- S350 (SWB/LWB) - equipment with S300 and additionally seats with ventilation and heated steering wheel, optional ABC suspension was offered;
- S550 (SWB/LWB) - equipment with S350 and additionally Nappa leather upholstery, since 2009 seats with massage function, keyless system, rear electric blinds;
- S600 (LWB) - equipment with S550 and additionally ABC suspension, Burmeister audio system, rear seats with electric adjustment, massage and ventilation, panoramic roof;
- S65 AMG (LWB) - equipment with S550 and additionally ABC suspension lowered by 15 mm, AMG ceramic brakes, AMG body kit, carbon fiber inserts, leather and Alcantara upholstery.
Several additional equipment packages were also offered:
- Premium - panoramic roof, seats with massage and ventilation, Burmeister audio system, keyless system, rear electric blinds;
- AMG - AMG bodykit, AMG rims, Airmatic suspension lowered by 10 mm, steering wheel with shift paddles;
- Designo - Designo leather and Alcantara upholstery, exotic wood inserts, chrome details, ambient lighting;
- Driver Assistance - blind spot monitoring assistant, lane keeping assistant, Distronic Plus with Pre-Safe Brake, Night View Assist Plus;
- Entertainment - rear sofa entertainment system with screens in the headrests, wireless headphones, remote control.
There are also two limited editions:
- S550 Final Edition - about 100 pieces in Japan, limited edition at the end of production, has unique markings, Burmeister audio, Designo upholstery, 20" wheels, massage seats, in this edition Mercedes W221 the engine is a 5.5 V12 Bi-turbo unit;
- S600 Saks Fifth Avenue - made in the USA, but several copies went to Japan, a special body color Mocha Black, interior in Almond Beige, available only in the LWB version.
