Mercedes-Benz CLS 550 - II generation (C218, 2011-2018)

The Mercedes CLS of the C218 series debuted in January 2010 as a prototype shown in Las Vegas, and the production version hit showrooms in July of the same year. Bruno Sacco and Robert Leibham are responsible for the project. The new generation continued the assumptions of the previous one, but gained an extended wheelbase, new engines and improved driver assistance systems.

In the Japanese market, the car was offered only with all-wheel drive - 4MATIC, while in Europe a rear-wheel drive was also available. This was due to the preferences of local customers. Four-wheel drive allows for more confident cornering in all conditions. The car was still produced on the basis of the E-class platform. This is a steel structure with body elements made of aluminum (hood, front doors). The 4MATIC drive has a torque distribution of 45:55 (front/rear). Airmatic suspension with adaptive air shock absorbers is standard.

In 2014, a facelift was introduced, which appeared in Japan in June. Exterior changes included a grill, bi-xenon headlights with an optional Intelligent Light System package, LED rear lights with sequential turn signals and new 19-inch wheel designs. The interior changes included the Command NTG 5.0 system with an 8" touchscreen, an improved steering wheel and ambient lighting. From the technical changes, the new 9G-Tronic gearbox was used, thanks to which the combustion in the Mercedes CLS 550 was reduced by about 0.5-1 l/100 km. Engine power remained unchanged. Added Magic Body Control with a road scanning camera and an improved 4MATIC drive with torque vectoring.

• Elegance - after the facelift, the following equipment elements were added - Distronic Plus system, active lane keeping assistant, contactless trunk opening, Command NTG 5.0 system with 8" touchscreen and Bluetooth as standard, since 2016 Apple CarPlay, LED headlights with Intelligent Light System, ambient lighting, new dashboard;
• Avantgarde - before the facelift - equipment as in Elegance and additionally sports seats with stronger lateral grip and 12-way adjustment, 19" wheels, sports grill with chrome cross bar, chrome sports thresholds, sports steering wheel, aluminum pedals, black wood finish.
• Avantgarde - after the facelift - additionally sports bumpers with diffusers, sequential LED turn signals in the mirrors, brushed aluminum inserts, sports seats with optional Alcantara trim.

One special version was offered:

• Mercedes CLS 550 Grand Edition - limited globally to 1000 units, sold in Japan approx. 100 units, has Avantgarde equipment with Designo package (porcelain leather upholstery, wenge wood, illuminated sills), AMG 20" rims, AMG sports exhaust system, panoramic roof, Grand Edition emblems, Burmester 3D audio system High-End.
