Mercedes CL C140 (1992-1998)

The first generation was based on the W140 platform. For weight reduction, aluminum doors and a hood are used. The car had rear axle drive (RWD) and automatic transmission. For the 1996 year of production, CL underwent a facelift. It received a new grill, redesigned headlights, a Command system with a 6.5" screen and improved engine cooling. The gearbox has also been improved.

Mercedes CL C215 (1999-2006)

Although the Mercedes Benz CL was still based on the S-Class, with the generation with the designation C215 it was slightly different in appearance. We are talking, of course, about double headlights that bring to mind glasses. The car was still large, but at the same time lighter than the C140. In this generation of the Mercedes CL car, the engine was first paired with a 5-speed automatic, and later the 7G-Tronic gearbox was introduced.

In 2002, the car underwent a slight facelift. In addition to the new box, the new Command appeared and the grill and rims were changed. An interesting fact is that in Europe this model was also offered in a version with 4MATIC drive, and in Japan only rear-axle drive was available.

In Japan, only 2 engines were offered, and in Europe the choice was much larger:

• 5.0 V8 with 306 hp
• 5.5 V12 Biturbo with 500 hp

Mercedes CL - equipment versions

Again, the Japanese did not have too many versions of equipment to choose from, but they were richer for the start than in Europe. It is worth mentioning that the AMG version was not offered in Japan, so customers there had to bring them through unofficial channels.

In this generation there were 2 versions of the CL model:

• CL 500 Avantgarde - bi-xenon headlights, leather upholstery, ventilated and heated seats, 4-zone climate control, rear view camera, parking sensors
• CL 600 Exclusive - in addition to a more powerful engine and the same equipment, it also had, among others, the first active cruise control in the world, which the manufacturer called Distronic

In tears due to the lack of an AMG variant, the manufacturer offered the Japanese to purchase the AMG Sport Package, which included new body elements, sports seats and a sports steering wheel.

Mercedes CL C216 (2006-2014)

The Mercedes CL of the C216 series was the last CL on sale. Later it was replaced by the S-class coupe. For the first time, Japanese customers were able to purchase a version with a 4MATIC drive. This was introduced as standard for the CL550 during the 2010 facelift, and the headlights were changed, including the Command with a 10.25" screen and a 7G-Tronic Plus gearbox.

• CL 600 - same as CL550 and additionally, among others: perforated leather, seats with massage function, active suspension ABC, active cruise control Distronic, electrically closed doors, analog IWC watch on the center console

In 2012, a limited edition Grand Edition was introduced. Only 20 pieces went on sale, so this is a real white raven. It has, among others, an interior with black ash wood, an AMG package, designo porcelain leather and Grand Edition emblems on the fenders.
