BMW M5 from Japan

The BMW M5 is one of the most iconic sedans in automotive history. If you want to drive an original car that combines practicality with the driving qualities of a sports car, or if you are looking for an interesting investment of capital, it is worth choosing the BMW M5. The technical data of each generation are impressive, so it is worth knowing them before buying.

BMW M5 E28

The first generation of the BMW M5 appeared in 1984 and was a shock to the automotive world. The car was produced until 1988, was based on the modified chassis of the model 535i and had an engine from the BMW E24 M635CSi. At the time of launch, it was the fastest mass-produced sedan in the world. He could boast a power of 282 hp. Only 2,241 units of the BMW M5 E28 were produced, so this model can be a good investment of capital. It is worth mentioning that officially the car never made it to Japan.

BMW M5 E34

The next BMW M5 went on sale in 1988 and was produced until 1995. The engine initially had 315 hp, but in 1991 the 3.8 engine with 340 hp came under the hood. With this update, BMW used the EDC hydraulic suspension with P and S operating modes. The former was used for normal driving, while the S mode worked, for example, on the track. The rarest variant of the M5 E34 is the station wagon version, because of the 12,254 produced copies of this generation, the station wagon accounted for only 891 units.

Special versions:

  • Cecotto Edition — it is distinguished by Nappa leather upholstery and heated front seats, only 22 pieces were created in Lagoon Green and Mauritius Blue colors.
  • Winkelhock Edition — has a smaller fuel tank with a capacity of 81 l, Recaro seats, M-Technic II steering wheel with suede upholstery. Removed the rear head restraints, fog lights and a few other elements to reduce weight. It was produced in the number of 51 pieces.
  • 20 Jahre Motorsport Edition — made in 20 units and only in Mugello Red. It has red seat belts with BMW Motorsport lettering, carbon fiber dashboard panels and Alcantara upholstery.

BMW M5 E39

In the BMW M5 E39, the V8 engine came under the hood for the first time. At the same time, it is one of the most valued and desired generations of the M5. The 4.9 naturally aspirated engine generated a maximum power of 400 hp. It is also the first M5 with multi-link rear suspension and aluminum front suspension elements. The manufacturer considered the introduction of a station wagon version, but in the end only a prototype was created, because the Germans did not find a financial justification for the M5 station wagon. There was also no special version based on the M5 E39.

BMW M5 E60

With the next generation, BMW has raised the bar again. This time, a V10 engine with a sequential gearbox, controlled by blades located at the steering wheel, went under the hood. The maximum power is 500 hp, but in P400 mode it is limited to 400 hp. The interior has a head-up display, navigation and ventilated and heated seats. The car also went on sale in a station wagon version, but this one was not very popular. Production totaled 20,589 units, of which only 1,025 were M5s in the station wagon version.

BMW M5 F10

The new generation M5 again brought significant changes under the hood. The manufacturer returned to the V8 engine, but this time a turbocharger appeared. Engine capacity decreased to 4.4 l, but power increased to 560 hp. Optionally, you could order a package that increased the maximum speed to 305 km/h. Otherwise, it was electronically limited to 250 km/h. In 2014, the Competition package appeared, which increases power to 575 hp and lowers the suspension by 10 mm. In 2015, the power of the package was further increased to 600 hp.

Special versions:

  • 30 Jahre BMW M5 is an anniversary edition, limited to 300 units. It has the Competition package and the color Frozen Dark Silver.

BMW M5 F90

The BMW M5 F90 was produced in 2017-2023. It had an engine from the F10 model with 600 hp. The novelty was the replacement of the rear-axle drive by the xDrive. In 2018, the Competition package was introduced with 617 hp, a stiffer and lowered suspension and an exhaust system with a particulate filter.

Special versions:

  • First Edition M5 — produced in the number of 400 pieces, it is distinguished by the painting in the color Frozen Dark Red Metallic.
  • 35 Jahre M5 — produced in the number of 350 units, engine power increased to 625 hp. The car was offered in Frozen Dark Grey II from the BMW Individual range.
